OCD, anyone?

I won't even hide the fact that NZ and I are super organized. He with the important stuff, me with the not-so-important stuff..Like organizing the fridge.
We took a trip to COSTCO this morning to stock up on food for the week, and I spent the rest of the afternoon portioning out our veggies, fruit & cottage cheese while also manning the BBQ for the first time since we got the new one. I pulled off a serious feat..both tri tip and chicken without overcooking! Woohoo!
So, yeah, I'm a bit obsessive compulsive when it comes to our fridge and organization.

Chicks

With my love of all things egg related, it only makes sense that we have chickens of our own. NZ had chickens when he was little, and we're looking forward to building a coop, buying some chicks and having fresh eggs...Soon enough there will be no more weekend trips to COSTCO to buy our weekly 5 dozen.

I am stoked. A new garden AND chickens?? I may just become the next Inga Garten, only cuter.

Sh!tty Kitty

Beav earned himself a new nickname this morning.
Sh!tty Kitty..and I mean literally.
Smack dab in the middle of our guestroom bed.
Thanks, dude. I'm gonna send you the dry cleaning bill.

Proof

Proof that from a young age I knew one way to snag a man was through his stomach..I ran across this photo of me & my childhood friend, Ben when we were about 3....
mmmmmm, chips and dip..Have some!

I was such a good girlfriend I even hand fed him.

So all you boys that passed me up in high school and college, too bad so sad..

Nick's the lucky winner (=

girls don't like dirt

Now that the office is almost completed ( we're just short closet doors), NZ took the opportunity to work outside this weekend. Better yet, our neighbor offered to help! We got super lucky in the neighbor department...if I do say so myself. It's more than just a "Hi, how are you" relationship with them...We borrow from them, they borrow from us...it's sorta like an open door policy. We like that neighborly thing we've got going. Far too often you hear of people feuding with their a-hole neighbors...but, thankfully..that's not us. We like where we're at.

Anyhow, my neighborly love aside, I'm also diggin' the new location of our ramshackled shed ( previous owner "gifted" it to us..gee, thanks old man). I'm debating asking NZ if he thinks I would be able to give it a fresh coat of paint, a D.I.M. ( Do-it-myself) make over..I know, it's just a shed, but ick. It's brown and white. My girlfriends would understand, right ma'am??

NZ dug out the side of our hill, put in a retaining wall, leveled the ground and laid brick...Minus the hill digging, everything else was done today. He's a workhorse, dude. No one works harder than my ol man..

I of course, oversaw the whole thing while sitting out in the sun, enjoying some human interaction. After a week of being housebound anything else is exciting..Including watching other people work. Isn't that sad?

Anyhow, we've got about 150 feet more to dig out and repeat the retaining wall process...and I'm thinking, I'm going to be able bodied soon, so I am sure I will be put to work too..

But don't those silly boys know, girls don't like dirt..Not this one, at least.

18 lbs of pure lovin'

Alright, so maybe we feed our kitty the best brand of kitty food..so good in fact, that we end up feeding the neighbor's cats, the raccoons and any other furry critter that happens to enjoy a good meal around here...

What's the problem in that, you ask?

Uhm, an 18 lb cat...that's the problem.

Beav loves his Felidae so much that he is officially 18 lbs of pure lovin'.

I found this out today when I received his veterinary report card. Unbelievable.

18 lbs, buddy!

Anyhow, the vet visit went alright. He's had a wound on his leg for a while, and we had been watching it, but when he started limping on Sunday we thought we ought to take him in to have it checked...Well, then a whirlwind of events happened the next 48 hours, and so finally, 3 days later, we got him into a vet to check it out.

Good news: No fracture in his leg.

Bad News: Cellulitis of the wound on his leg ( I am a terrible kitty parent!) requiring antibiotics...I can just see myself trying to chase him down 2x a day for his dosing..It was a circus this morning trying to get him into the carrier..Poor NZ went off to work wearing black cat fur on his shirt. Beav is also, surprisingly, OLD. He has some bridging of his back, which basically comes from age...So, he's also got some NSAIDS to alleviate the inflamation..

Sheesh, do they offer Medicare for kitties? If so, we need to jump on that program!

Sweet babyZ

In loving memory of our baby girl, to which we had to say hello and goodbye on the very same day.... Although NZ and I are not religious, this song is what's getting me through the past few days since delivering our sweet girl 16 weeks early. Sometimes songs can heal, or get you through a rough spot in life..This one plays over and over in my head....

(click to hear song through Youtube)

Sissy's song by Alan Jackson

Why did she have to go
So young I just don't know why
Things happen half the time
Without reason without rhyme
Lovely, sweet young woman
Daughter, wife and mother
Makes no sense to me

I just have to believe
She flew up to Heaven on the wings of angels
By the clouds and stars and past where no one sees
And she walks with Jesus and her loved ones waiting
And I know she's smiling saying
Don't worry 'bout me

Loved ones she left behind
Just trying to survive
And understand the why
Feeling so lost inside
Anger shot straight at God
Then asking for His love
Empty with disbelief
Just hoping that maybe

She flew up to Heaven on the wings of angels
By the clouds and stars and past where no one sees
And she walks with Jesus and her loved ones waiting
And I know she's smiling saying
Don't worry 'bout me

It's hard to say goodbye
Her picture in my mind
Will always be of times I'll cherish
And I won't cry 'cause
She flew up to Heaven on the wings of angels
By the clouds and stars and past where no one sees
And she walks with jesus and her loved ones waiting
And I know she's smiling saying
Don't worry 'bout me

Come on over girls!

I'm so excited!

The office is nearly finished! ( see above) It's finished enough to move furniture back in, thus freeing up our guest room ( future room of BabyZ) again!

Just in time....

For Ma'am and Miss Jen to come visit!
Two of my long time BFF's are coming to visit me really really soon...and I am thrilled. NZ's got some Dodger tickets for us and I am hoping to get in some beach time/ shopping time with them while they're here in my neck of the woods. No matter what we do, we always have fun together.
A big Thank You to NZ for getting it done!

Sucker

I'm such a sucker for cute beachy baby stuff.

I mean, what baby needs a clock?

BabyZ won't be able to tell time for quite a while, but I found this on Amazon.com while looking for a new clock for our office ( that search is ongoing..apparently stainless clocks with orange faces are few and far between...all google searches for "Orange Clock" pull up loads of Clockwork Orange info..yeah, uhm, big help..thanks google)..So of course, I ran across a super adorable goldfish clock that I don't need, and haven't ordered, but will now obsess over for the next week or so and finally give up or give in..because that's how I roll.

I've had the idea of a clock suggested to me for baby's room to help time feedings, but my guess is that my suggester meant digital, not old school.

I can't help but agree..

Today is Thursday.

Why's that so important, you ask?

In my world, it's People Magazine day!

My co worker and I look forward to Thursdays just for this reason, and although it doesn't come every Thursday ( sometimes we have to wait until Friday) we're always extra excited when we see our mail carrier come through the door with the latest issue.

Anyways, this week's cover is Kate Gosselin.

Initally I was thinking OMG, What a publicity lover.. capitilizing on her husband's alleged affair and late night shin digs at the bars. I was reluctant to want to read the article, but I did, and although I am not a fan of Kate's ( I hate how she berates John ), I can't help but to agree with many of the things she has said about their crumbling relationship.

It made me feel for her...

I know, I know..it's only an alleged affair..he hasn't been tried and convicted of anything yet ( although a quick google search will bring up pretty damning evidence)..and she was soooo militant and unappreciative of him...but one thing that hit a chord with me and I can't agree more..is that no matter what..She did not cause him to make the decisions he has made.

He's a grown man, and he made a decision. Sadly, from the interview done with Kate for People, it sounds as if it's been going on much longer than the February 6th photos that circulated. John has been telling her he is "unhappy" with things..There was a myriad of things he was "unhappy" about, and although there were surely options to improve his happiness, I think that he took the easy way out from responsibility.

Easy, but cowardly.

I'll eat my words if he can prove he was faithful to his wife..but coming from someone who has been in Kate's place, the way she speaks of John's personality changing rings all too familiar with the failure of my first marriage.. It's like there is a cheater's manual out there...So all you out there that have never been cheated on ( lucky you!) when your significant other tells you they are unhappy and has a laundry list of things they are unhappy about...chances are you can't change what they have already done...It's not YOU. It's them.

They'll blame you ( because it makes them feel justified) but honestly, they made the decision, not you...And yes, it affects you in a major way ( especially with 8 kids!) but I truely believe that once a cheater, always a cheater...

So, to end, I'm not rooting for Kate and John to split up, or stay together..but instead hoping for the sake of their kids they make the best decision for their family...and also, as much as I love my PEOPLE magazine, I'd love it if we don't hear another thing about the Gosselin family.

Let them resolve their issues in private.

Someone's got a Birthday today!

Happy Birthday to my mah! She turns 60 today!!!!!!
We've got a surprise day trip planned for this weekend, and my sister is dropping off a flower to her this morning at her work ( a dose of public embarassment never hurts). A singing Gorilla woulda been funny, but my mah is much like myself..not fond of being the center of attention.
So, mah, we'll see you Saturday & celebrate just your style.

Breakin in the new Q

Best thing ever....a new BBQ for free!
Thanks to our brother-in-law for scoring it for us last week! Budlight Chicken is back in our BBQ rotation which makes NZ a very happy guy.

Baby preparedness drill...

We had what I'd like to refer to as a "Baby Preparedness Drill" last night...thanks to our kitty Beaver.

He's lovin' on me as start to type this blogtastic story about last night..How can I resist his love??

Let me backtrack a bit...

We purchased a new sectional ( our first "real" furniture purchase) well aware that our kitty had torn up our old hand me down leather couches..He used the uprights as a scratching post, and we, as bad parents, didn't do enough to stop him. Why, you ask?

By the time we realized he was scratching, it was too late. I did attempt to throw a wrench in his love of the couch by using "Away Kitty" spray at $5 a pop, and it did nothing to curb his scratching addiction.

So, I had been begging NZ for a new sectional for what seems like forever (Which was probably only a few months, but once I get my mind set on something, it is all consuming), and he forwarned me that once the new sofa was in, the kitty would be OUT. Of course I wanted new furniture so I willingly agreed that Beav cat, as much as I love him, would become an outside kitty.

It's now been at least a month since we brought Mr. New comfy sofa home, and it's been covered with blankets . Wanna come over and camp out in our blanket fort, anyone? We don't even attempt to uncover them during the daytime, since we're not so sure Beav's addiction only hits at night..So, here were have this beautiful new sofa, and it's covered up. It's quite a sight.

Anyhow, NZ's door finally arrived to replace our kitchen access door which currently has a kitty door in it, so he can switch out the kitty door with a new solid door, thus making Beav an official outdoor kitty. We'll put the kitty door in our garage access door, so he can call the garage home from now on (note to self: roll up car windows nightly!).

Now that it's like actually going to happen, I feel so guilty for kicking Beav out of the house. My biggest fear right now is the Raccoon Bully that seems to love Beav's cat food as much as Beav does. Not only does the coon stalk our house, he actually welcomes himself inside while we are home! Nick caught him in the kitchen Thursday night. No kidding...A coon...in MY kitchen. YUCK. Anyhow, moving the food and the cat out to the garage leaves room for the fight of the century, with both animals being in one small enclosed area...together...with one bowl of food to duke it out over. I'm wishing we would have purchased one of those electronic cat doors with the magnetic collar..so only BEAV has access to the garage. That alone woulda saved me the sleepless nights I had when we used to keep out kitchen access kitty door open at night.

Since the return of the coon last week, we have been locking our kitty door that leads to the kitchen every night. If Beaver is in the house, he is in for the night...if he's out, well, he is supposed to be out for the night...but come 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning, the familiar wail that only Beav can manage to pull off awakens me and I begrudglingly go let him in. I'm a pushover like that.

Last night, I had Beav locked in for the night, and he decided he wanted out just before NZ and I signed off to bed. I let him outside, and told NZ out loud that there was NO way I was going to let him in before morning...I was mad at Beav for wanting out after I had him inside, safe and sound...

2 o'clock rolls around.

I hear the familiar scratching at the cat door, along with the occasional head butt attempt to bust his way in ( those locks are sturdy!) ..I contemplated getting up and saving him the brain damage, but reminded myself that I was NOT letting him in..

A few minutes later, a familiar kitty cry right outside our bedroom window. I laughed a little to myself, thinking, how pathetic... but was going to stick to my guns and weather out his cries. Fast forward through an hour of crying/singing/wailing, whatever you want to call it...right outside our window and NZ wakes up.

NZ:"Is that Beaver?"

Where has he been, the damn cats been crying like this for over an hour!

Me:" Yes! He won't stop. It's been going on for over an hour, baby."

NZ: " Well, aren't you going to let him in? Where is he?"

Me: " Right OUTSIDE our window..and I said I wasn't letting him in tonight, but I can not sleep with his constant crying."

NZ: " Go let him in"

So, I, the pushover that I am, went and peered through the kitchen window and saw the most pitiful little black kitty sitting right under our window, wailing his little eyes out..I should have grabbed a camera for the sight, but good Lord, it was 3 o'clock in the morning, who takes pictures of their cat at that hour?

I unlocked his kitty door, swung it a few times for him to hear that it was open, and a few minutes later, we had a kitty purrring his little heart out in our bed with us.

Suppose Beav is just preparing us for parenthood. Thanks, dude.

TGIF

Ahhh, what a week...glad that Friday is actually finally here and we survived!!
Nick was in St. Louis, MO for the beginning part of the week and with all his celebrity encounters in "the Lou", one might think his"there on business" explanation was a bit of an alibi. He and his co-worker were there for a trade show, and were able to catch a few Cardinal vs. Pirate games underneath the St. Louis arches. What could be better than a few ballgames after a long days work??
Nick will tell you...Celebrity sightings!

As the story goes, one night they ended up searching out a bar to watch the Laker game. They ended up walking into a bar, and the first person that he makes eye contact with was none other than Nelly, as in "It's gettin' hot in herrrrre..so take off..all your clothes", Nelly. And if the Nelly-in-the-same-bar night wasn't enough, they also saw Lil' Kim in LAX as they waited for luggage. Watching "Dancing with the Stars" has really paid off... I am not sure either of us would recognize her had we not been watching this season of DWTS.
Usually after a week away, the first day back in the office is a long one..As in a " may as well pack a sleeping bag and a fresh change of underwear" kind of long day...But to my surprise, as I was on my way home today, he called and said that he too, was on his way home from the office!!! Today was perhaps the first time EVER that he has gotten off of work at a normal quitting time...Pure AWESOMENESS!
A week in St Louis had him itching for some salt water therapy, so we headed to Feria Beach this afternoon and he got in a nice surf session with his brother, and I was the snap happy wife with the camera...( OZ & NZ await a set, photo below)

Friday evening at the beach...It doesn't get any better than this!!

Spit happens....

..that's why I made these tonight.
I bought a 12 pack of cloth Gerber diapers from Target for a grand total of $17 and raided my mother in law's fabric stash ( which I barely made a dent, if any..the woman can shop for fabric..she's got her own little store in her closet) this afternoon during my lunch hour.
There is no way I can take credit for the cuteness of the idea..I got it off a blogspot blog link sent to me by my sister, and now I know why the instructions specify the need for straight lines and the use of one of those ugly green mats ( wish my mom still had hers!). However, crooked seams and all, I am still really impressed with my first few attempts at couture burpies for Baby Z. I mean, what baby wants to spit up all over a burp cloth that looks just like the one her best friend drooled all over yesterday. It's about equal to showing up at prom with the same dress, right?

I made two different kinds. Some were completely covered on one side with decorative fabric, but I made two lonesome souls with a strip of fabric down the center, to imitate the ones I had seen on the super cute burpie blogspot link.. I found it much easier to cut a 2" perimeter around the diaper and press edges than to try and get the strip of fabric for the center stripe ones straight, hence the fully covered burp cloths outnumbering the stripes.

There are still 6 more plain cloth diapers calling my name, but I think it's time for bed.
Between the Jesusita fire evacuations for my sister & dad's cousins in Santa Barbara, baking cuppycakes for a friend, cutting out and sewing burpies and my kitty trying to help out with the latter, I'm spent.

And for the belly watchers...Here's a photo taken last Sunday, one day short of 22 weeks.

Deja Vu?

Didn't my family just go through this, like, uhm.....6 months ago with the Montecito Tea Fire? Now the weather Gods have decided that the area just a bit further North from my family's houses needs to be put to the test....

Which sucks.

My sister & other family members live near the newest fire, dubbed the "Jesusita" fire due to the proximity to the Jesusita hiking trail in the SB foothills.

So, as of 7:00 pm. my sister and her husband and Frankie bird are packed up and waiting to see if the evacuation line will move 4 blocks in their direction. If so, she's gotta get out and go stay at my mom's...

I've got my fingers and toes crossed that she doesn't have to evacuate like my mom, and both grandmothers & grandfather did last year. They were out of their homes for 5 days with very little knowledge of whether they would return to a home or ashes. Thankfully, all 3 family homes were spared, although my grandparents home just about the ONLY thing still standing in their neighborhood....

As of 8:00 p.m. no word from my sister as to whether they are evacuated or not, and the coverage from the local news is pretty crummy. Here's the most recent photo I could find...

Put a fork in it.

I'm done....
..Done with selecting the ever so non-important ( but important to me) crib bedding!

I've been back and forth on a few choices, and even the green light from granny to buy whatever my heart desired wasn't enough to get me to fork over close to $200 on sheets for a baby to inevitably barf, poop and pee all over....I couldn't do that to Granny...

So....With the help of my sister and her awesome Ebay skills, I finally went back to the set I had originally selected when pregnant in 2008. Thank goodness for overstocks and people trying to make a buck selling them on Ebay. It's amazing...the things you can find on Ebay..Endless, I tell ya.

Baby Z will definitely be her father's daughter sleeping in "surfer" themed bedding.

To add to the good news, I am sure NZ will be glad to have his wife back from internet- search- and- overanalyze-baby bedding- land...One decision down, many more to go, but at least this one is out of the way. It was a BIG process for me.

I've been fortunate enough to receive TONS of hand me downs from both of my sister-in-laws which are nearly new and surprisngly, fairly gender neutral ( they both had boys). So, since I am recycling many baby items, I figure I can have ONE thing that is exactly as I want it..and that's my baby girl's bedding.

Thank you to my sister Stephanie for helping me out today! Can't wait to see it all put together.

NEXT UP: managing to pull NZ away from his extracurriculars to make a pilgramage to Babies-R-Us to select a crib... Stay tuned...

Homemade Play-Doh

Here's a recipe for non-edible homemade play-doh, although my mom and sister and anyone who knew me in my formative years will tell you, that didn't stop me from eating it. I must have had an iodine deficiency cause I tasted it tonight and dang is it ever salty.

Anyhow, this is a slightly different version than the stuff my mom made us, as it requires the use of a cook top and sauce pan.

INGREDIENTS
2 c. Flour
2 c.Water
1 c. Salt
2 TBSP. cooking oil
2 tsp. cream of tartar
food coloring

INSTRUCTIONS
This stuff is super easy to make.

1.Pour all ingredients except for the food coloring into a saucepan, turn heat on low and stir. The dough will start to pull away from the sides of the pot, and you can fold it inwards until the dough forms a ball.

2.Once the dough forms a ball, turn out onto a non-porous countertop or cutting board covered in wax paper. ( caution: dough will be warm to hot)

3.Knead dough until it becomes elastic and pliable.

4.Separate dough into 3 balls

5.Add food coloring to each ball, and fold inwards until color is dispersed throughout dough ball.

Store dough in airtight ziploc bag & refrigerate for longevity.
